Eagles, Trojans likely to play 8-man football in 2019

first_imgELLSWORTH — The Ellsworth and Mount Desert Island football teams are likely to play the eight-man version of the sport in 2019 after the Maine Principals’ Association Football Committee laid out a proposal Tuesday for the possible format. The teams are two of 20 high school football programs in Maine set to adopt the new format, which is being implemented in hopes of addressing concerns regarding declining roster sizes. Teams will be given the chance to pick between moving to one of two eight-man football classes or continuing in one of three 11-man classes. The proposed format would eliminate Class D, in which the Eagles currently compete along with Bucksport. The Golden Bucks would stick with 11-man football and compete in Class C next season under Tuesday’s proposal.A meeting to finalize the eight-man proposal will be held Jan. 31, and a classification meeting will be held Feb. 11. The final vote on the matter is expected to take place in April. This is placeholder textThis is placeholder textlast_img read more
