Liverpool transfer special: Dream signing to replace Steven Gerrard? Five possible targets

first_img 6 Miralem Pjanic (Roma) – Click the arrow for a dream signing! – The Bosnian played a pivotal role in Roma’s resurgence last season in Serie A, helping the club to finish second behind Juventus. Pjanic is seen as an old fashioned creative midfielder and he has the ability to pick a pass, drift past opponents with ease and score the odd belter. The 24-year-old enjoys controlling the midfield and setting the tone of Roma’s attacks and has made it known in the past he would be open to a move away from Italy. Every great career has to come to an end some day and Steven Gerrard’s recent poor form means there is an increasing number of fans urging Liverpool to start looking for an heir to the skipper’s throne in midfield. There can be no doubting the 34-year-old’s powers are on the wane and despite boss Brendan Rodgers insisting he has no concerns over his captain, Gerrard’s days as the main man at Anfield are drawing to a close. For the best part of 12 years, Gerrard has been the heartbeat of the Reds midfield and replacing him will be no easy task. But with that in mind, talkSPORT takes a look at who could fill the Scouser’s boots.Click the arrows to reveal five possible replacements for Gerrard. 6 Claudio Marchisio (Juventus) – Click the arrow to see a player who could light up Anfield for years to come – A familiar face to English fans after he opened the scoring for Italy against the Three Lions with a superb 20-yard drive at the World Cup. Such a strike was reminiscent of many past Gerrard efforts and that’s not where the similarities end. Marchisio is a local Juventus lad through and through, having graduated through the Serie A giants’ academy, much like the Liverpool captain, who was born on Merseyside and has spent his entire career at Anfield. The 28-year-old possesses brilliant awareness, strength and pace and is easily a readymade replacement for Gerrard. Paul Pogba (Juventus) – The French star has already rubbed Manchester United’s noses in it for letting him go on the cheap by rapidly establishing himself as one of the world’s best young midfielders. But what better way would there be of really emphasising the point than by joining arch rivals Liverpool and shining in the Premier League? To prise Pogba away would require a bid upwards of £50million, but Brendan Rodgers has a number of fringe players he could sell to raise some of those funds. Signing the World Cup star would send out a huge statement and go a long way to replacing Gerrard. 6 Ross Barkley (Everton) – Click the arrow for a creative talent who could supply Sturridge and Sterling – This would take some serious cojones for the England midfielder to make the move across Stanley Park to the Toffees’ fiercest rivals. Undoubtedly, Barkley is the best English midfielder to come out of Merseyside since Gerrard and has the potential to be even better than the former Three Lions captain. Blessed with skills aplenty, a brilliant big game attitude and stardust in his boots, Liverpool would have had to pay £50million to land the 20-year-old, but it is doubtful Everton would sell to their neighbours. 6 6 Morgan Schneiderlin (Southampton) – Click the arrow for a readymade replacement – The Saints midfielder lashed out at the club for refusing his wish to join Tottenham this summer, but has since happily been re-assimilated into Ronald Koeman’s side and made a good start to the new season. That said, his ambition to play for a loftier club is clear and the French international is the definition of a box-to-box midfielder, much like Gerrard in his heyday. Given the strong Southampton contingent now at Anfield, a move could easily appeal to the 24-year-old. It’s got to happen some time!
