ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Redshirt junior Nicole Newman (Madison, Wis.) has been named Missouri Valley Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Monday, Feb. 12. Newman and her teammates will travel to the February Freezer hosted by Mississippi State, Feb. 16-18, in Starkville, Miss. Print Friendly Version The 10 strikeouts versus SEMO was the 19th double-digit strikeout performance of Newman’s career. The two wins increased her career total to 44 and the 19 strikeouts give her 574 in her career. She has been named MVC Pitcher of the Week six times in her career. Newman made her return to the pitching circle after missing nearly all of the 2017 season due to injury. She started the 2018 season opener against Green Bay where she pitched four innings and allowed one hit with nine strikeouts and two walks in an 11-0 victory. Newman followed that with another four innings of work against Southeast Missouri State and struck out 10 Redhawks. She allowed just two hits and zero walks in the 1-0 win.
