After the thousands of conversations last year on #MeToo – which made feminism the word of 2017 – this is the incident that has thrown into sharp relief the one question we should’ve all been asking: what can be done now? This allows us a sliver of hope That we can take forward the conversation of #MeToo and use it to remove the good law of the jungle and introduce the bad law of civilisation First we should stop the trial by media This endless ranting ends as such in rants forgotten for the next sensational headline What we need is for laws to be changed in India and around the world Secondly we should talk about sex and dating to men and women We should teach men that they do not have to approach every woman like a conquest in a dirty old Hindi movie We should teach men to understand what non-verbal and verbal cues mean Women should also not expect men to be the only ones to change That is assigning them the very power we are fighting against Women need to be told that it is okay to say NO – loudly clearly and emphatically You cannot expect someone to read your mind If someone makes you uncomfortable you cannot smile and suffer through it; walk out with dignity and assertion You can say no without being confrontational You can draw the boundary and ask for what you want whether it’s romance or a one-night stand without feeling guilty for getting what you deserve You can stop being the abla nari and become a krantikaari Be brave Be assertive Be a man without the props It’s 2018 We’ve had the conversations We’ve paid our dues Perhaps the reason this incident has unfolded the way it has right at the start of the year is to give us the opportunity to take #MeToo to the next level I end with what I said in my tweet: We may still be teaching men like #AzizAnsari about consent but accusing a man of sexual misconduct comes with a responsibility to the truth Sorry but bad foreplay does not constitute sexual harassment and #MeToo is not a bandwagon that every woman has some of his favorite targets: the failure of US lawmakers to repeal "dead" Obamacare Democratic "obstructionists" and alleged "ties to Russia" by Hillary Clinton his defeated opponent in the 2016 presidential election Ten years ago South Africa was a diminished cricket powerhouse After a highly successful period following their readmission in 1992 South African cricket had yet to fully recover from the turmoil of match fixing in 2000 that culminated in revered captain Hansie Cronje being banned for life Graeme Smith aged just 22 had been appointed captain in 2003 and helped transition South Africa into a new era away from the stench of match fixing But South Africa while still resolute and earnest were treading water South Africa Test captain Hashim Amla (lef) with Faf du Plessis AFP South Africa lost five consecutive Tests in the mid-2000s to Australia including embarrassingly losing three straight at home They also lost at home to England and away series in India and Sri Lanka From 2004-2006 South Africa shockingly lost six of nine series and won only against the dregs – West Indies Zimbabwe and New Zealand Mickey Arthur became South Africa’s coach in the midst of that flux Despite South Africa’s mediocre performances he was adamant there was enough talent He believed South Africa could not only have a renaissance but had the ability to surpass the deeds of South Africa’s golden generation of the 1990s and become the best team in cricket A number of highly precocious players headlined by AB de Villiers Hashim Amla and Dale Steyn were making their way through the ranks so the future looked bright But the team as a collective needed direction and an uncompromising purpose In one of his first team meetings Arthur challenged the players to strive for greatness “I wanted to instill that into them when I took over as coach” Arthur tells Firstpost “I distinctly remember having that conversation We wanted to be number one in the world but we couldn’t just win all the series at home in our comfort zone” Arthur recognised South Africa needed to regain their home dominance but to truly become a force they needed to be comfortable in all conditions and play well abroad Since losing in Sri Lanka in mid-2006 South Africa have not lost a Test series abroad During the past nine-and-a-half years they have played 15 series abroad winning 10 of them South Africa have memorably won twice in Australia and England including perhaps their greatest achievement in ending Australia’s 15-year home unbeaten streak in 2008-09 They have won everywhere except in the UAE (although they did win in Pakistan in late 2007) and in India where they have drawn twice but have not played Tests since early 2010 Arthur believes winning in India and in conditions so demanding and foreign is “very tough” for teams outside the sub-continent He thinks this current series is the final frontier for this group of South African players to accomplish very much like Australia’s similar quest during their tour of India in late 2004 “India’s such a difficult and tough place to play” Arthur says “I think the wickets will turn and turn a lot It is likely to be what we (when Arthur coached Australia) faced in 2013 and the wickets were diabolical They resembled a beach by day two India clearly back their spinners “But South Africa has been able to maintain their success in all conditions and that is the hallmark of a really good side” Winning in India could somewhat change South Africa’s perception While they are acknowledged as Test’s best and clearly the most consistent team since Australia’s impregnable team started to decline in 2007 there’s no doubt they are underappreciated For context Australia during their peak from 1995-2007 lost two series and a one-off Test in India one series in Sri Lanka and once in England Of course that great Australian team – and the West Indies circa the 1980s – were winning matches at a blistering rate Those two teams endure because they eviscerated the opposition so ruthlessly They were memorable and won with a high dose of panache South Africa ever conservative have been content in grinding their opposition into submission It hasn’t been as pretty or entertaining to watch but nonetheless it has been highly effective Arthur believes South Africa has been underrated but rates them a cog below those two great modern teams “I think they are under-appreciated” Arthur says “You always judge a team on how they perform abroad and South Africa have done that The best wins when I was coach were when we won in England and Australia particularly in Australia because that was the first time we had won there It was a tough tour and winning there was particularly sweet “South Africa are not as dominant as the great West Indian and Australian teams but they are still a great team in their own right” Despite the retirements of Smith and Jacques Kallis in recent years and Dale Steyn likely to be reaching the end of his peak Arthur is bullish South Africa can maintain their excellence for years to come “I think they keep going because they still have a great core and are a quality outfit” he says “Continuity has been a major key The younger guys when I started as coach have become senior players now and are really leading by example “Just about all the current test teams are strong at home but struggle when conditions are not favourable South Africa is the exception That is why they are so good and can’t be discounted whenever and wherever they play” to poetry ? went live on Thursday (
