But before he could, the Knicks moved on from Jackson, who couldn’t build a playoff roster in his three seasons. Mills was promoted and he has taken aim at cleaning up the mess within the organization.“Part of my job is to try to add some sense of calmness to what had been a little bit of a crazy environment that we’ve been going through,” Mills said. “So I think that we have a good group of people here.”But it’s a group that looks incapable of defending, and it will be hard to outscore its ineptitude on that end without the 40 points per game the Knicks lost when they traded Anthony and let Derrick Rose leave. So they could be even worse than last season’s 31-51 finish, but at least some of the dysfunction could begone. Fans seemed fed up with it under Jackson, so maybe they’ll accept a team that loses quietly if they see growth on the court without the circus off it.“They want to see effort, they want to see tenacity, they want to see hard work and they just want to see us not backing down from anybody,” Hardaway said. “The icing on the cake is winning ballgames. It’s hard to tell yet what the Knicks have in the French point guard, who missed summer league with an injury and then most of preseason when he was hurt again.HARDAWAY’S HERE: Mills’ first big move was to give Hardaway a $71-million deal to return to New York after Jackson traded the former first-round pick to Atlanta two years earlier. His game grew with the Hawks, and the Knicks believe he’s ready for a bigger role now.SPEED IT UP: Jackson’s triangle system is mostly gone, with Hornacek saying the Knicks want to open up the offense more in hopes of getting more easy shots.JOAKIM’S JOB: Joakim Noah’s forgettable first season of a $72-million deal ended with him serving a suspension for violating the anti-drug policy. Two wins ensure two bronze for Sania; one for Somdev

PTISania Mirza shocked second seed Tamarine Tanasugarn as Indian players capped an all-win day, assuring the country of three more bronze medals in the tennis event of the Asian Games in Guangzhou on Saturday.Unseeded Sania shocked Thailand’s Tanasugarn 6-2 6-3 to reach the women’s singles semifinals and assured herself of a bronze medal in the event. The Indian then combined with Vishnu Vardhan to seal a bronze in the mixed doubles event as their fourth seeded Taipei rivals — Chia Jung Chuang and Yi Chu-Huan — retired mid-way.After losing the first set 2-6, the sixth Indian pair came back strongly to take the second 6-4. They were leading 1-0 in the decisive set when the Taipei pair opted out of the contest.Early in the day, Somdev assured himself of another bronze when he and Sanam Singh beat the Chinese pair of Yan Bai and Zhang Ze 6-2 6-4 in the men’s doubles quarter-finals at the Aoti Tennis Centre.Somdev has already won a ronze in the men’s team event. In men’s singles, Somdev scored a dominating 6-1 6-1 win over Uzbekistan’s 16th seed Vaja Uzakov and Karan Rastogi thrashed Taipei’s 10th seed Ti Chen 6-0 6-4 as India won all five contests of the day.In women’s singles, the 166th ranked Sania, a silver medallist at 2006 edition in Doha, relied on her power-packed strokes to beat the Thai, who once figured in top-20 and now stands at number 58 in the world.advertisementSania escaped unscathed in a tough opening game, in which she saved six breakpoints, and gradually took control over the contest, which lasted one hour and 27 minutes. She will next face third seed and world number 69 Akgul Amanmuradova of Uzbekistan.”When you are not a seed, you are playing tougher matches because you don’t have a bye. You have to beat them all if you want to win the tournament. Seeded or not you have to block that out and just come out and play,” Sania said.”She (Tanasugarn) is absolutely amazing. She’s been a great player for many, many years. She has carried the flag for Asian tennis for a long time. She has been playing really well for the last few months.”I think I am playing better every match. Asian Games Boxing: Vijender in semis, Amandeep in quarters

The Commonwealth Games bronze medallist will face Filipino Iii Victorio Saludar in the last-eight stage.Vijender, who had disappointingly settled for a bronze in the Delhi Commonwealth Games last month, took advantage of his long reach and imposing built against a rival who struggled to match his speed and power. His deft footwork helped Vijender dodge several of Cho’s attacking attempts and the Korean found it hard to respond to the counter-attacks that the Indian launched.Leading 3-0 after the opening three minutes, Vijender also benefitted from the desperation shown by Cho.The Korean ended up hitting Vijender below the waistline during one of his attempted attacks, inviting a warning which added two points to the Indian’s tally.Vijender too received a warning for clinching Cho in the eventful second round during which the Korean was also thrown off balance by one of the world number one’s power-packed hooks.advertisementThe third round was a similar story of domination by Vijender, who daringly kept his guard low after building up a sizeable lead in the bout. With inputs from PTIlast_img read more
