AVCP lays off 30 employees cites economy

(Photo courtesy of AVCP)The Association of Village Council Presidents, or AVCP, has laid off 30 employees, citing budget concerns.Download AudioIn a press release, the corporation says general staff will take a five percent salary reduction, and senior management will face a ten percent salary cut. AVCP is the lead nonprofit for the 56 villages in the Yukon Kuskokwim Delta.It is unclear why the layoffs are occurring, but the release attributes it to the economy.In mid-September, AVCP was included in a historic settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice regarding contract costs for hundreds of tribal agencies. As a result, the organization was awarded a little over $9 million.“During these changing economic times we have identified the need to reduce costs associating with providing services in our region,” the release says.
